with Michael Grieve and Francesca Comune

Howrah: a conversation piece The residency is hosted by the Anandi Foundation and takes place in Howrah, a city shaped by movement, labour, and constant transformation. Howrah is located on the western bank of the Hooghly River, opposite to its twin city of Kolkata. Over two weeks, participants are invited to explore this environment through photographic practice, engaging with it as an open and evolving space. Rather than focusing on fixed narratives, the program encourages a curious and attentive approach to the city’s complexity: its overlapping histories, informal economies, and everyday rhythms. Particular attention is given to what is not immediately visible, the gaps, contradictions, and subtle connections that shape the urban experience. The residency will be accompanied by Michael Grieve and Francesca Comune, fostering a shared space of exchange, discussion, and experimentation. Participants will develop personal and collective projects, approaching photography as a way to explore, question, and build connections. The program supports the creation of “conversation pieces” and evolving cartographies, works that remain open, flexible, and in dialogue with their surroundings. The residency functions as a shared urban laboratory, where observation, experimentation, and collective thinking are central. It invites participants to slow down, to look closely, and to engage with the city in a way that keeps the process open, incomplete, and in conversation.
